Who We Are

Islay Baptist Church are a community of different people who love God, follow Jesus and seek to serve our beautiful island with the help of the Holy Spirit. We are friendly and love meeting new people, so whether you’re an islander, or a visitor on holiday, we warmly invite you to any of our
services or activities.

Our Minister is the Rev, Andrew Burnham who moved here with his wife, Emily, in January 2019.

Our Beliefs

Islay Baptist Church is in membership of the Baptist Union of Scotland whose Declaration of Principle is as follows:

Christ Centred

That the Lord Jesus Christ our God and Saviour is the sole and absolute Authority in all matters pertaining to faith and practice, as revealed in the Holy Scriptures, and that each church has liberty, under guidance of the Holy Spirit, to interpret and administer His laws.

Believers Baptism

That Christian Baptism is the immersion in water into the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, of those who have professed repentance towards God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, who died for our sins according to the Scriptures; was buried and rose again the third day.

Witness

That it is the duty of every disciple to bear witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to take part in the evangelisation of the world.

Our Buildings

Islay Baptist Church was formed in 2002 from the two congregations of Bowmore Baptist Church and Port Ellen Baptist Church. Both buildings have been retained and services and other activities take place at both locations.

Bowmore

Located opposite the petrol station on Jamieson street this is the oldest of our two buildings. With the worship space and offices on the ground floor and the manse above it, the Bowmore church is where we hold our evening service and Sunday school. The church have been meeting here since the early 1800s.

Port Ellen

The Port Ellen church stands in its own grounds in Lennox Street. This is where we gather for our Sunday morning services and our Teen’s Cafe. It also provides the hub for the popular summer Beach Mission. People have been worshipping here for just over 100 years.
